WHR Calculation Guide

What is Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR)?

WHR is a simple measurement used to assess body fat distribution. A higher WHR indicates more fat stored around the waist (an “apple” body shape), which is associated with a higher risk of certain health conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease compared to fat stored on the hips (a “pear” body shape).

How to Measure Correctly

  • Waist Circumference: Measure at the narrowest point between your lower rib and the top of your hip bone (iliac crest). This is usually just above your belly button. Relax your abdomen and measure at the end of a normal exhalation. The tape should be snug but not compressing the skin.
  • Hip Circumference: Measure at the widest part of your hips or buttocks. Stand with your feet together.

Interpreting Your Results (WHO Guidelines)

The health risk categories are based on guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO).

For Men:

  • 0.95 or below: Low Health Risk
  • 0.96 to 1.0: Moderate Health Risk
  • Above 1.0: High Health Risk

For Women:

  • 0.80 or below: Low Health Risk
  • 0.81 to 0.85: Moderate Health Risk
  • Above 0.85: High Health Risk

Assess your body fat distribution and potential health risks.
