Rules for Significant Figures
Significant figures (or "sig figs") are the digits of a number that are meaningful in terms of accuracy or precision.
Rules for Counting Sig Figs:
- Rule 1: Non-zero digits are always significant. (e.g.,
123has 3 sig figs). - Rule 2: Zeros between non-zero digits are significant. (e.g.,
101has 3 sig figs). - Rule 3: Leading zeros are never significant. (e.g.,
0.05has 1 sig fig). - Rule 4: Trailing zeros are significant only if the number contains a decimal point. (e.g.,
12.00has 4 sig figs, but1200only has 2).
