How to Round Numbers
Rounding makes a number simpler while keeping its value close to what it was. The result is less exact, but easier to use.
The Rounding Rule:
- Step 1: Identify the digit in the place you are rounding to (the "rounding digit").
- Step 2: Look at the digit immediately to its right (the "decision digit").
- Step 3:
- If the decision digit is 5 or greater, you "round up" by adding 1 to the rounding digit.
- If the decision digit is 4 or less, you "round down" by leaving the rounding digit as it is.
- Step 4: All digits to the right of the rounding digit become zeros (or are dropped if they are after a decimal point).
