How to Round to the Nearest Thousand

Rounding makes a number simpler while keeping its value close to what it was. The result is less exact, but easier to use.

The Rounding Rule:

  • Step 1: Identify the digit in the thousands place (the "rounding digit").
  • Step 2: Look at the digit immediately to its right, in the hundreds place (the "decision digit").
  • Step 3:
    • If the decision digit is 5 or greater, you "round up" by adding 1 to the thousands digit.
    • If the decision digit is 4 or less, you "round down" by leaving the thousands digit as it is.
  • Step 4: All digits to the right of the thousands digit become zeros.
