Understanding the Ponderal Index

The Ponderal Index (PI), also known as the Corpulence Index or Rohrer's Index, is a measure of leanness (or corpulence). It assesses weight in relation to height.

Unlike BMI, which uses height squared, the Ponderal Index uses height cubed, making it a measure of mass density. It's often used for pediatric measurements but can also be applied to adults.

Formula:

PI = Weight (kg) / Height (m)³

General Adult Categories:
  • PI < 11: Considered underweight.
  • PI 11 to 15: Considered in the normal range.
  • PI > 15: Considered overweight.

These categories are general guidelines for adults and may not be as widely adopted as BMI categories.

Assess your leanness with the Corpulence Index.
