What is a Perfect Square Trinomial?

A perfect square trinomial is a special type of polynomial with three terms that can be factored into the square of a binomial.

It follows one of two forms:

\( (px+q)^2 = p^2x^2 + 2pqx + q^2 \)

\( (px-q)^2 = p^2x^2 - 2pqx + q^2 \)

To check if a trinomial \(ax^2+bx+c\) is a perfect square, you must verify three conditions:

  1. The first term, \(a\), must be a perfect square.
  2. The last term, \(c\), must be a perfect square.
  3. The middle term, \(b\), must be equal to twice the product of the square roots of the first and last terms: \(|b| = 2\sqrt{a}\sqrt{c}\). This is often simplified to the condition \(b^2 = 4ac\).

This calculator can check these conditions for you or find the missing term needed to satisfy them.
