The FOIL Method

To multiply two binomials (expressions with two terms), a common technique is the FOIL method. FOIL is an acronym that stands for:

  • First: Multiply the first terms in each binomial.
  • Outer: Multiply the outermost terms.
  • Inner: Multiply the innermost terms.
  • Last: Multiply the last terms in each binomial.

For an expression like \((ax+b)(cx+d)\):

\[ \underbrace{(ax)(cx)}_{\text{First}} + \underbrace{(ax)(d)}_{\text{Outer}} + \underbrace{(b)(cx)}_{\text{Inner}} + \underbrace{(b)(d)}_{\text{Last}} \]

After performing these four multiplications, you combine the like terms (usually the 'Outer' and 'Inner' terms) to get the final quadratic expression.

Multiplies \((ax+b)(cx+d)\) using the FOIL method and graphs the result.
