Using the Box Method

The Box Method (or Area Model) is a visual way to multiply polynomials. It's a great alternative to the FOIL method, especially for polynomials with more than two terms.

  1. Draw a Box: Create a grid with rows and columns for the terms of each polynomial.
  2. Label the Box: Write the terms of the first polynomial across the top and the terms of the second polynomial down the side.
  3. Multiply: Multiply the term from the row and column for each cell in the grid.
  4. Combine Like Terms: Add all the terms from inside the box, combining any terms that have the same variable and exponent.
Example: \((x + 2)(x - 3)\)

You would create a 2x2 box. The final step is to combine the terms from the cells: \(x^2 - 3x + 2x - 6 = x^2 - x - 6\).

Input Format: Use `x` as the variable. Use `^` for exponents (e.g., `3x^2 + 2x - 5`).
