How to Purify Water

Chemical disinfection is a common method for making water safe to drink when boiling is not an option. This tool calculates dosages based on standard concentrations.

Important Considerations:
  • Cloudy Water: If the water is cloudy, first filter it through a clean cloth, paper towel, or coffee filter. Then, double the disinfectant dosage.
  • Wait Time: The recommended wait time is crucial for the disinfectant to work. For very cold water, it's best to double the wait time.
  • Smell Test: After waiting, the treated water should have a slight chlorine or iodine smell. If it doesn't, add another dose and wait again.

IMPORTANT SAFETY DISCLAIMER

This information is for emergency use only. Use only regular, unscented chlorine bleach. Never mix bleach and iodine. These methods may not be effective against certain parasites like Cryptosporidium. The safest method is always to boil water for at least one minute.
