Skeletal Muscle Mass Estimator
Skeletal Muscle Mass (SMM) is the amount of muscle attached to your skeleton. It’s a key component of body composition and plays a vital role in metabolism, strength, and overall health.
This calculator uses an estimation formula based on research by Lee et al. (2000) which requires age, gender, height, and weight. The formula is:
SMM (kg) = (0.244 × BodyWeightkg) + (7.8 × Heightm) + (6.6 × GenderCode) – (0.098 × Ageyears) – 3.3
- BodyWeightkg: Your weight in kilograms.
- Heightm: Your height in meters.
- GenderCode: 1 for male, 0 for female.
- Ageyears: Your age in years.
SMM Percentage: This is your SMM (kg) divided by your total body weight (kg), multiplied by 100.
General Reference Ranges for SMM % (Adults):
- Men: A healthy range is often considered to be above 33-35%. Lower values might indicate a need to build muscle.
- Women: A healthy range is often considered to be above 26-28%. Lower values might indicate a need to build muscle.
These ranges are general. Athletes may have higher SMM percentages. Low SMM can be associated with conditions like sarcopenia, especially in older adults.
Disclaimer: This calculator provides an ESTIMATE for informational purposes only. It is NOT a substitute for professional medical advice or precise body composition analysis (like DXA scans or BIA). SMM can vary significantly. Consult a healthcare professional for accurate assessment and guidance related to your muscle mass and health.
Estimate your SMM based on age, gender, height, and weight.
Your Estimated Skeletal Muscle Mass:
SMM: kg
SMM Percentage: % of body weight
Reminder: This is an estimation. For accurate assessment and health advice, consult a healthcare professional. These values should not be used for self-diagnosis or treatment decisions.
- SMM is a vital component of health. Maintaining adequate muscle mass is important, especially as you age.
- Factors like diet, exercise, and genetics influence SMM.
