Understanding Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to perform basic life-sustaining functions like breathing, circulation, cell production, and nutrient processing while at rest.

This calculator offers two common formulas:

Mifflin-St Jeor Formula (often considered more accurate):

  • Men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) – (5 × age in years) + 5
  • Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) – (5 × age in years) – 161

Revised Harris-Benedict Formula (Original 1919, Revised 1984):

  • Men: BMR = 88.362 + (13.397 × weight in kg) + (4.799 × height in cm) – (5.677 × age in years)
  • Women: BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 × weight in kg) + (3.098 × height in cm) – (4.330 × age in years)

Your BMR can be a starting point for determining your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) by factoring in your activity level.

Estimate your daily calorie needs at rest.

Note: This calculator provides an estimate. Actual BMR can vary. The Mifflin-St Jeor formula is generally recommended for higher accuracy.

Your Estimated Basal Metabolic Rate:

Calories/day

Calculated using:

Notes:

  • BMR is the energy your body burns at complete rest.
  • To find your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), multiply your BMR by an activity factor (not calculated here).
  • These are estimates. Individual metabolic rates vary.
