FOIL Method Calculator
How the FOIL Method Works
The FOIL method is a mnemonic for multiplying two binomials.
The FOIL Acronym
- First: Multiply the first terms in each binomial.
- Outer: Multiply the outermost terms.
- Inner: Multiply the innermost terms.
- Last: Multiply the last terms in each binomial.
Finally, add all four products together and combine like terms to get the final simplified expression.
Linear Binomials: \( (ax + b)(cx + d) \)
Result: \( acx^2 + (ad+bc)x + bd \)
General Binomials: \( (ax^n + b)(cx^m + d) \)
F: \( (ax^n)(cx^m) = acx^{n+m} \)
O: \( (ax^n)(d) = adx^n \)
I: \( (b)(cx^m) = bcx^m \)
L: \( (b)(d) = bd \)
Multiply two binomials step-by-step.
