Understanding Scientific Notation
Scientific notation is a way of writing very large or very small numbers. A number is written in scientific notation when a number between 1 and 10 is multiplied by a power of 10.
To Scientific Notation:
- Move the decimal point to create a new number between 1 and 10.
- Count the number of places you moved the decimal point. This will be your exponent.
- If you moved the decimal to the left, the exponent is positive.
- If you moved the decimal to the right, the exponent is negative.
From Scientific Notation:
- If the exponent is positive, move the decimal point to the right that many places.
- If the exponent is negative, move the decimal point to the left that many places.
