Understanding Car Seat Stages
Choosing the right car seat and using it correctly is the best way to keep your child safe in a car. This guide is based on recommendations from safety experts like the NHTSA and AAP.
The Four Main Stages:- Rear-Facing: For infants and toddlers. This is the safest position, protecting the head, neck, and spine. Use an infant-only seat or a convertible seat.
- Forward-Facing with Harness: For preschoolers. Once a child outgrows the rear-facing limits, they should use a forward-facing seat with a 5-point harness for as long as possible.
- Booster Seat: For school-aged children. A booster positions the vehicle's seat belt correctly over the child's strong bones.
- Vehicle Seat Belt: For older children who have outgrown a booster seat and can pass the 5-Step Test for a proper fit.
Golden Rule: Keep your child in each seat stage for as long as possible, until they reach the maximum weight or height limit for that specific seat. Always check the seat's labels and manual.
